My granddaughter Shanelle Spence was in Kindergarten in 2002. The teacher asked me to come and read some stories that I had written and illustrated for my children and grandchildren. Suddenly I had an idea. I asked each child to give me a word and I promised that would write them a story using their words. As you can imagine we had words like unicorns, butterflies, fairies along with monsters, triceratops and big trucks. The book came together and before I coloured it we made copies and bound them. Each child received a book as her/her own individual colouring book. The book became the first of many. Some were done for kindergarten children and some for grandchildren in Grade 5. I wanted to show them that “Words made stories and books.”
